Meeting Facilitation

Meeting facilitation is our specialty! We'll assist you in clarifying your desired meeting outcomes and building an agenda to attain those outcomes. Then we'll create a comfortable working environment that encourages everyone present to contribute to the meeting's success in reaching the identified outcomes.

Some of the techniques Ms. Beck has used in the past to ensure that groups work productively include:

  • working with the parties to develop effective agendas with clear outcomes,
  • creating an atmosphere that encourages participation by all,
  • developing and enforcing ground rules to make sure meeting time is spent effectively and participants are respectful,
  • ensuring the right people are invited and present,
  • strengthening relationships among and between participants,
  • modeling expected behaviors of listening and treating people with respect,
  • preventing domination of a meeting by one or a few individuals,
  • thoroughly exploring and understanding all interests before attempting to find solutions,
  • active listening,
  • reframing statements to move the group toward seeking solutions,
  • keeping the group focused on their particular charge,
  • creating an expectation of personal responsibility in participants for the group's success,
  • scheduling field trips with meetings to increase shared understanding,
  • accurately capturing group work products,
  • incorporating group learning and skill building into the process, and
  • following up in a timely manner on any commitments made.

Ms. Beck is listed on the roster of environmental conflict resolution practitioners maintained by the Morris K. Udall Foundation. Listing on this roster requires documentation of case hours on a variety of environmental conflict-related cases. (www.ecr.gov)

Some examples of Ms. Beck's facilitation experience include:

Golden Sunlight Mine Reclamation: Facilitated multi-stakeholder meetings for the Bureau of Land Management to negotiate an acceptable reclamation plan for a major open pit gold mine. Ground and surface water monitoring were primary issues of concern.

Elk Working Groups: Designed and facilitated a series of meetings for three elk working groups in northern and eastern Montana for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Elk populations exceeded management goals and elk were causing economic impacts on agricultural producers. Parties to the process included producers, sportsmen, state and federal land managers, outfitters and guides, and elected officials.
Yellowtail Dam and Bighorn River Management: Designed the process and facilitated a series of meetings over an two-year period for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to address issues surrounding water management and reservoir operations. Stakeholders in the process included the states of Montana and Wyoming, recreation, economic development, water rights, power generation, fisheries, and other interests. Three tribes also had water rights interests and participated in the process. In addition to seeking specific management recommendations the group increased their capacity for future problem-solving by building relationships and skills.

Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council: Beck Consulting was retained by the not-for-profit to help design and facilitate a process to provide consensus recommendations to the U.S. Congress on the future of the National Fish Hatchery System. At the time of the project, the hatchery system was in need of major capital investment to continue its mission, and at the same time, attempting to address issues related to disease, genetics, and the role/desirability of using hatchery fish to supplement natural populations. The group assembled for the task included tribal representation, private aqua-culturists, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other federal agencies, state natural resource departments, anglers, watercraft manufacturers, and others. Consensus recommendations were developed and provided to Congress.

Endangered Species: Beck Consulting has been retained to facilitate meetings about grizzly bears, black-footed ferrets, and sensitive and endangered prairie ecosystem species. Meeting participants included eight states, and representatives from the governments of Mexico and Canada.

Shoshone National Forest:  Beck Consulting was retained to help design and facilitate a series of meetings between the Shoshone National Forest and their conservation partners—consisting of county commissions, conservation districts, and the state of Wyoming. The purpose of the meetings has been to address issues related to Forest Plan revision. Opinions of those at the table over such issues as grazing, mineral development, wilderness designation and other issues are strongly held. The professional facilitation provided by Ms. Beck allowed for respectful, issue-focused dialogue, stopping short of agreement—which was not the goal of the meetings.

Current Transportation Solutions (CTS):  Beck Consulting was retained by CTS for two transportation projects. Beck Consulting developed and implemented public involvement strategies for transportation development plans (TDPs) for Butte-Silver Bow and Rimrock Trailways intercity bus company. The work performed by Ms. Beck included designing and facilitating focus groups, public and planning team meetings across Montana. Ms. Beck also interviewed key stakeholders and assisted in analyzing data from all sources to develop plan goals.
